Biography

Personal Statement

At the San Raffaele Scientific Institute (Milan, Italy) I serve as Director of Diabetes Research Institute (https://research.hsr.it/en/institutes/diabetes-research-institute.html )and Chief of the Department of Regenerative Medicine and Transplantation. I also serve as Head of the Beta Cell Biology Unit (Diabetes Research Institute), and Director of Human Islet Processing Facility, and previous coordinator of European Consortium for Islet Transplantation that has been providing Human beta Cell Products for research and clinical applications at HSR, in Italy and across state barriers in Europe since 2000. I also serve as Professor in Endocrinology at University “Vita Salute San Raffaele” of Milan and as Honorary Visiting Professor at Vrije Universiteit of Brussel. My primary expertise lies in the fields of diabetes and pancreatology. Specifically, I possess extensive experience in diabetes therapy and pathophysiology, as well as regenerative medicine and pancreatic cancer. My research interests are centered around beta cell replacement, immune tolerance induction strategies, dendritic cell biology, and stem cells. As a physician scientist, I am deeply dedicated to the principles of translational and precision medicine, aiming to bridge the gap between scientific advancements and their practical application to improve patient care. I currently serve as section Editor of Cell Transplantation-the Regenerative Medicine Journal and as associated editor of Transplant International and Journal of Endocrinological Investigation, as member of editorial board of Acta Dibetologia, as president elected of the International Pancreas and Islet Transplantation Association (2023-2025, IPITA) of The Transplantation Society (TTS), as member of the steering committee The European Pancreas and Islet Transplant Registry (EPITR 2020-2025), as  member of the National Board and scientific coordinator of the Italian Society of Diabetes (SID, 2020-2024) and previously (2011-2017) as member of the European Pancreas and Islet Transplantation Association (EPITA) committee of European Society for Organ Transplantation (ESOT), as member of the National Committee for Food Safety (2018-2021, Italian Ministry of Health),and as Councilor (2015-2019) and treasurer (2019-2023) of IPITA.

 

Publication activity (January 2024)

Lorenzo Piemonti authored a total of 308 original articles published in peer-reviewed journals surveyed in PubMed. H-index (24/10/2024): 65 Web of Science; 69 Scopus; 78 Google Scholar. Considering the period 2019-present Lorenzo Piemonti authored a total of 104 original articles published in peer-reviewed journals for an impact factor of 926,334 (mean impact factor: 8.907, scopus citation index 3,987)
