Prof. Fadhil graduated from Baghdad College of Medicine in 1977 with honor degree in Surgery. After completing his fellowship training in the UK in 1986, he returned to Baghdad to lead an active clinical and academic career as a consultant urologist and transplant surgeon. He was appointed Professor in Surgery in the year 2000. Prof Fadhil has held many leadership positions including Dean of the College of Medicine in Iraq, Co-Founder and Secretary-General of the Iraqi Association of Nephrologists and Urologists, Co-founder of the University Kidney Transplant Center, and Editor in Chief of the Iraqi Journal of Medical Sciences.
In 2004 he relocated to Qatar where he had a leadership role in shaping Qatar's multiorgan transplantation program and pioneering 'The Doha Model' for organ donation, ensuring equitable access to transplantation services for all residents, irrespective of citizenship.
Internationally, prof. Fadhil is known for his active membership and advisory roles in organizations like the Declaration of Istanbul Custodian Group, Transplantation Society- Ethics Committee, and the WHO Task Force on Organ Donation and Transplantation. His vision of promoting self-sufficiency in transplantation through collaborative efforts led to the groundbreaking Qatari initiative “Reach Out for Organ Transplant Self-sufficiency” program (ROOTS) in 2018. Building on this success, Qatar announced in 2024 the establishment of the WHO-collaborating center, the “Doha International Center for Strategy & Leadership in Organ Transplantation” (DISLOT). This initiative aims to spearhead a broader collaborative effort to empower colleagues worldwide in establishing successful and ethical transplantation programs.
