Introduction: Patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) have various heart diseases. The result of deceased donor kidney transplantation (DDKT) performed in these patients are difficult to predict. Therefore, we would like to investigate the result s of DDKT performed in ESRD patients with heart disease.
Methods: Between March 2011 and Feb. 2024, 95 patients underwent DDKT at department of surgery at Konyang university hospital, Daejeon, Korea. We compared two groups according to heart disease history: no heart disease group (n=72), heart disease group (n=23). The following characteristics were evaluated retrospectively through the medical records.
Results: The 5-year patient survival in the no heart disease group was higher as 96.7% compared to 81.9% of the heart disease group (P = 0.003). The 5-year graft survival were 97.0% and 91.3% in the no heart disease group and heart disease group (P = 0.308) retrospectively. the eGFR level by period of recipients was not significantly differentiated between both groups (12 months: 73.01±23.4 ml/min vs. 67.2±20.7 ml/min, P=0.358, 60th months; 77.7±23.4 ml/min vs. 79.7±21.9ml/min, P=0.407). Also, hospital stay, operation time and complication rates were not significantly differentiated between the two groups. However, DGF rate was higher in the heart disease group compared to the no heart disease group (13.0% vs. 1.5%, P=0.048).
Conclusions: According to the results of this study, kidney transplantation in patients with heart disease should be decided after careful consideration of the patient’s condition before surgery.
