Professor Markus Barten is a cardiac surgeon that has worked in Transplantation Centres of Excellence across Europe and North America for more than 25 years. He is currently at the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, University Heart & Vascular Center in Hamburg, Germany. His clinical research focus is on therapeutic monitoring of immunosuppressive drugs, management of AMR and de novo DSA, monitoring and treatment of viral infections (including CMV infections), and developing renal sparing drug regimens. He was the Principal investigator and first author of the European multicenter study on the real-world use and clinical impact of extracorporeal photopheresis after heart transplantation published in 2023, and is a member of the External Expert Advisory Board: exTra - Innovative applications of ECP in SOT (Horizon Europe Programme). He is, in addition, a member of several International Transplantation Societies and a reviewer of several peer-reviewed Scientific Journals.
