Anette Melk is a specialist in pediatric and adolescent medicine and specializes in kidney and high pressure diseases in children (pediatric nephrologist, hypertensiologist DHL). Anette Melk studied human medicine at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen, the University of London and the Harvard Medical School Boston. She completed her training as a pediatrician at the Ruprecht Karls University in Heidelberg. During an almost four-year research stay at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, she investigated the importance of cellular senescence mechanisms for kidney aging and chronic transplant failure. Anette Melk returned to Germany to the Ruprecht Karls University in Heidelberg, where she led her own working group. In 2008 she accepted an appointment at the MHH to become a professor of interdisciplinary experimental transplantation medicine. She works clinically as a senior physician in the field of pediatric nephrology. Anette Melk is the study leader of the 4C-T study, a Europe-wide study on the incidence and significance of cardiovascular comorbidity in children with chronic kidney failure and transplantation. In 2014, the study was expanded to include children and adolescents after liver, lung and stem cell transplantation, which she is responsible for together with representatives from the relevant disciplines. Anette Melk's working group (AG Interdisciplinary Experimental Transplantation Medicine) is concerned with the importance of insufficient regenerative capacity in the pathogenesis of renal and cardiovascular diseases. The focus is on their therapeutic influence through the modulation of mechanisms of cellular senescence. The influence of transplantation on senescence-mediated renal and cardiovascular damage, particularly in children with renal insufficiency, is being investigated in clinical studies.
